Incorporating Southwold & Ipswich Boatyards

Gralian

Gralian is a 45ft Medina class Saunders Roe built in 1937. Jonathan and Helen Lewis bought her in 2010 as a long term live-aboard and were planning to set off to the Mediterranean , when they discovered she needed some work as she was leaking badly. Having been recommended to Harbour Marine Services they brought her to our yard in Southwold. Unfortunately it was discovered that she had major issues.

‘She was leaking from the top down’ Her owner Jonathan commented.’ We asked John to lift three planks on the deck for inspection. He took the screws out, but they wouldn’t lift up. They turned out to be side-fastened with nails, driven in at various angles, across each-other.’

Worse was to follow. A bad repair, using car body filler and rain had got into the fabric of the structure, into the beamshelves and carlins, the tops of the bulkheads, knees and frames and then further down into the boat.

The basic repair turned into a re-fit and then to a full restoration. The hog was replaced together with the starboard garboards, and several hull planks. A new expoied sheathed deck was put on and slowly the yard began to put her back together again.

Jonathan and Helen have travelled extensively in her over the last 4 years. Through the French canals and around the Mediterranean, and last year they completed a circumnavigation of the UK. She is currently in the Baltic.
