Southwold Yard Services.

With twenty staff we are able to design, project manage and execute anything from the smallest repair to a new build or a complete restoration. Our in -house services include the following:

Full traditional and modern boatbuilding techniques in timber, GRP, aluminium and steel
West systems approved Osmosis treatment centre
Full rigging service
Marine engineering
Marine electrical engineering and design
Fabrication in steel, aluminium and stainless
Awlgrip accredited application centre

Our premises comprise of some 10,000 sq feet of temperature controlled and ventilated undercover shed space, a 1000 sq foot chandlery and hardstanding for 100 vessels.

Our own pontoons with electric and water facilities.
24 ton hoist, 20 ton crane.

Restoration

We pride ourselves in the ability to provide full quality restoration or rebuild service of vessels in either timber, grp or aluminium. Around 50% of our facilities are dedicated to the task of restoration and in the course of carrying out many classic restorations, some of which have attracted industry awards, we have attracted some of the best craftsmen and shipwrights in the country.

Repair & Refit

As a full service yard, we have the in house skills, personnel and infrastructure to carry out repairs and/or refit works on yachts and motor vessels constructed in wood, grp, alloy, steel or ferro. We’re recognised by major insurance companies to carry out repairs, surveys and coding. Many of our our staff are boat owners themselves and bring a huge amount of practical real life experience to how systems will work in practice.

Chandlery

Our fully stocked chandlery caters for both our workshops and our customers needs. Initially set up as the boatyard stores the Chandlery has developed over the years into an Aladdin’s cave of items including clothing, paints, ropes, electronics, hardware etc

Haul Out & Hardstanding

We have a Wise hoist and a 20 ton crane which can handle all our boat movements and rigging work. We have hard-standing for up to 100 vessels. We have access to two slips and can haul out vessels up to 50 foot in length. We offer competitive rates for hardstanding and are happy for owners to work on their vessels whilst they are with us.

We offer a complete package for the winter including haul out, pressure wash, anti-foul, hardstanding for the winter and launch.

Workshops

Our premises comprise of some 10,000 sq feet of temperature controlled and ventilated undercover shed space in three separate sheds. This allows us to always have a ‘clean’ shed for varnishing and painting. We have a fully equipped engineering workshop and a 1000 sq foot chandlery. Whilst vessels are under our care for a refit or restoration, we have the facility to store all personal and interior items in our store rooms.

We always welcome owners to come and work on their boats; we believe that if owners are part of the work on their vessel they will gain the best possible experiences from their use and ownership.

Rigging

We have one the most experienced rigging teams on the East Coast. They are able to make and fit both standing and running rigging to all vessels from modern cruisers, race yachts and dinghies to classic yachts. They are experienced in making your vessel sail better and more easily and their advice is, as always at HMS, free. We are able to design, make and rig timber spars for the more traditional vessel or provide new aluminium spars in conjunction with Z-Spars. Servicing and replacement of deck gear, furling systems and winches is also offered and we are the East Coast service agents for Lewmar.

We stock English Braid ropes and offer a full splicing service where our riggers can splice almost any line to suit your particular vessel. We carry a good stock of blocks and winches and can provide systems from Wichard, Lewmar, Harken, Ronstan, Spinlock. Selden and many others.

Engineering

Our engineering staff are able to diagnose and repair both diesel and petrol engines of all makes and models. We have a fully equipped engineering workshop and this allows us to carry out engine rebuilds and repair onsite. We are also able to supply most makes of engines at competitive prices and provide a full installation service, including design, manufacture of new engine bearers, stern gear exhaust systems and tank systems.

Working with our electricians, we are able to also supply and install generators. We supply and fit propellers from Bruntons, Gori and Darglow and fit as standard Ambassador rope cutters.

Painting

We have two dedicated and full time painters whom are able to provide your vessel with a prefect paint or varnish finish. We are an Awlgrip application centre and also use Hempels, International and Epifanes.

Our temperature controlled workshops ensure we are able to apply paints and varnishes throughout the year. Whether your vessel or mast needs a repair or a full repaint and varnish, we are able to accommodate your requirements.

Design

Much of our work is in refit and restoration and with this brings the challenges to satisfy our clients wishes to alter and improve their vessels to suit their personal requirements. Over the years we have become very adept at designing interior and exterior alterations to suit our clients’ needs without detracting from the often lovely original aesthetic overall appeal many vessels have.

Hippocampus

Hippocampus is a Bates Star Craft 33 from Shepperton on the Thames. She is coming to our Southwold yard to have a thorough refit.

1922 Maynard of Chiswick 27ft Thames launch

1922 Maynard of Chiswick 27ft Thames launch is a classic launch she has come to us for a full restoration, she will be stripped and refurbished over the winter. Today we moved her into the boat shed ready for the transformation to begin.

Antionette

Antoinette came into us back in 2018 for a fairly major overhaul and as works progressed we discovered further issues which needed to be resolved….

Maimonde

Maimonde is sister ship to Magyar and Grailian and another Saunders Roe Medina class. The owner came across her for sale in a marina in Hull, he contacted us initially enquiring about finding a surveyor, it was then we were able to share our knowledge and experience of the Medina Class and she was subsequently purchased.

Jorvik

Jorvik The latest edition to the HMS restoration fleet is Jorvik, a McGruer 41, she arrived with us during lockdown for an extensive restoration. She

Rummer Yawl

Rummer has come to HMS for a fairly major refurbishment, she has been shot blasted to remove the build up of anti-foul, now we can see what is beneath we can attend to any repairs that need doing,
